'Drama follows me' - Made In Chelsea's Hugo is moving to LA
Made In Chelsea first hit our screens to fill the 'structured reality' void left by the hugely popular The Only Way Is Essex. But by season two the South West London show aired alongside its Essex counterpart - sealing the postcode rivalry. Perhaps surprisingly, the foppish charm of Made In Chelsea has proven a success and series two was polished off with a live televised 'End of Season Party'. With an extra-long Christmas special coming up, iVillage.co.uk chat with one of the show's main players - the instinctively debonair Hugo Taylor...
We catch up with Hugo as he waits to meet (Chelsea co-stars) Spencer and Jamie for a weekend powerboating in Devon - obviously. Between some well-considered self-analysis and the inevitable hyperbolised statement, the Chelsea socialite tells us why he'd stick up for Rosie over Millie any day and reveals his plans to move to LA and become an actor...
How did the experience filming differ between the first and second season?
Hugo Taylor: For me, obviously the first season was a lot more enjoyable - my relationship got extremely difficult and the first part of the second season was really testing. We were going through a break up and when you’re doing that you don’t want everyone to know but you have to say ‘ok, this is part of the game’ and take it on the chin.
But our Christmas special was probably the most fun thing I’ve ever filmed so all’s well that ends well.
What can we expect from the Christmas special?
Hugo Taylor: It picks up where we left off. We went to film in Finland, in the Arctic Circle. It was definitely one of the best experiences - you’re in a remote and wild place with your friends, sharing a good time and you’re paid to be there!
The last episode of season two saw Millie publicly announce that, while you were dating her, you had hooked up with Rosie. Will we get more on this in the Christmas special?
Hugo Taylor: I think it’s definitely a chance for Rosie to put across her side of the story. She’s the one that’s been absolutely demonised; I’ve been let off scot-free. I think that it’s incredibly unfair, based on what happened off camera. Rosie made one mistake in her life - which was doing that - and she got in so much trouble for it but she’s one of the most moralistic and good-hearted people know and I would stick up for her over anyone - over Millie - anytime.
Is there a part of you that enjoys the drama?
Hugo Taylor: No. Drama follows me. I’ve lived in Chelsea my whole life and people always wanted to talk about me and what I’m doing. I know it sounds really conceited; it’s not, It’s just the way it is.
How has your life changed since you got involved with Made In Chelsea?
Hugo Taylor: It hasn’t really if I’m honest. I still hang out with the same people I hung out with. My best friends have been my best friends since I was 12, that will never change. I still go to the same places. It just means that my group of people I work with has massively expanded. I still act the same way, it’s not like I’m going out and buying flash cars, that’s never really been me.
