Trust

According to FRANK, most young people trust what their parents tell them over things they are told by other authority figures in their lives, such as their teachers or the police. Your opinions do matter to them, even if it doesn’t seem like it sometimes!

The truth is that you probably can’t prevent your teenager from coming into contact with drugs. But if you know the facts and can talk openly to your child about the risks you can help them to make the right choice if they do.

Top tips
- Find out the facts about drugs from FRANK before you start the conversation.
- Pick a good time to talk. Don’t do it before they rush off to school or out with friends.
- Stories in the media about drugs or drug-related storylines on TV can be useful springboards for a conversation. Using these opportunities can ensure your child doesn’t feel accused of anything and make them more likely to respond to the conversation.

Top tips continued
- Don’t make assumptions about what your child knows or does and consider in advance how you might react if your child tells you they have tried drugs.
- Listen with respect to what your child has to say and don’t lose your temper if you disagree with your child’s opinions.
- When talking about the risks try to talk about specific drugs rather than lump them all together.

- Whilst the risks of taking drugs are very real, it’s important you give your child realistic view of the harms - they’ll be more likely to listen to you.
- Let your child know you’re there for them and they can talk to you about drugs anytime.
- Set boundaries. Make it clear what your house rules are so they know what you will and won’t accept. If you or your child are too embarrassed to talk, why not ask a friend or family member to speak to them.
