Somerset's Illuminated Carnival Season - age old tradition linked to Guy Fawkes celebrations
Location: Somerset
Date November 4

November is carnival month in Somerset. These spectacular events take place throughout the county and are unlike anything else in the UK.  Huge illuminated floats that take a year to create process through the streets, colourful costumes abound, music fills the air and fireworks feature throughout – they really are a unique sight to behold!

The November carnivals are part of an age old tradition which stretches back as far as the 1600's and the Gunpowder plot. Guy Fawkes is the character associated with bonfire night, however the instigator of the plot was not Fawkes, but Robert Parsons from Nether Stowey in Somerset, a short distance from Bridgwater.

Today, the illuminated floats can be huge, over 50 feet long, and covered in hundreds of light bulbs. Dwarfing the streets, these magnificent creations, which draw awe and wonder from the crowds, are the results of months of work by the Carnival Clubs. Grand firework displays and street entertainment adds to the sense of fiesta and fun.

The November carnivals kick off with the biggest, and arguably the best, in Bridgwater on 4 November. There is entertainment in the town throughout the day, and the procession starts at 7.00pm - with over 120 large and colourful floats, it takes over 2 hours to process the streets of the town! This is followed by Squibbing (the simultaneous firing of lots of large fireworks) in the High Street. The Squib itself is a large firework, strapped to a cosh (a solid block of wood which is attached to a large pole). The Squibber holds the squib at arms length above their head with the firework facing toward the sky.

Any in Northampton?
One location or the WHOLE of the north, and it a Bonfire-FREE break, to get away from the fireworks.... This is terrible research.
If you want to find out if there is a bonfire in your local vilage then dont bother with this site.
