Wine of the week: Steenberg Semillon Constantia

by Alice King

There are some great quality wines coming out of South Africa these days, and Waitrose have recently added an impressive new Cape wine to their list: Steenberg Semillon 1999 Constantia.

Produced from the cool vineyards situated on the slopes of Table Mountain near Cape Town, this is a really classy number. It’s aged in French oak and therefore has rich vanilla overtones. And while it’s dry, it’s still relatively full bodied.

It’s well worth its price tag of £7.99, as it tastes like a £10-plus bottle. Try it with equally full-bodied dishes such as char-grilled chicken, fish or vegetables, and smoked chicken or duck.
