Wine of the week: Tesco French Merlot Prestige
Wines under £3 don't come much more delicious than this chocolately, rich-fruit Merlot
Lots of people rave about Saint Émilions - the softer seductive clarets made predominantly from the Merlot grape (Medoc clarets contain mostly Cabernet Sauvignon). But such is Saint Émilion's popularity that the wines can be pricey.
This week's Wine of the Week is made from the same Merlot grape, but produced much further south than Bordeaux. Tesco French Merlot Prestige is deep purple red, has an aroma of plain chocolate and lots of mouth-watering violet-like fruit.
It's a dry, medium bodied red that tastes great with beef, game and duck or spicy vegetarian dishes. And the added bonus? Until the 18th September it's reduced from £3.99 to £2.99. Sure, it's not Saint Émilion quality, but then nor is the price. So, buy a bottle - and if you like it, invest in a case. It'll still taste good at Christmas.
Tesco French Merlot Prestige, Tesco, £2.99 until 18th September
3rd September 2001
