Wine of the week: Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rouge 1998
There are lots of pretty boring, bland or soupy Côtes du Rhône reds about. But there are certain producers who make stunning wines year in, year out. It’s worth making a note of their names so that you can treat your taste buds when you see any of their products in a supermarket, off-licence or restaurant.
Marcel and Philippe Guigal are just such a producer. The Guigal Côtes du Rhône Rouge 1998 is a full-bodied red with lots of spice and blackcurrant flavours; there’s also an attractive hint of vanilla derived from the 18 months or so the wine has been aged in oak.
Fantastic with game, duck and smoked meats, this tastes like a £10-plus bottle of wine but costs around £7.49 from Oddbins, Majestic, Sainsbury’s and Unwins.
