Best wines for under a fiver

by Rob Parker and Jennifer Howze

wineCheap and nasty? It doesn't have to be. We take you through some of the best wines for less than five quid

Wines under a fiver are great for taking to parties or informal dinners. You often want something that will please as many people as possible and can stand alone without food. In this price range you're better off avoiding French wine and heading for the New World or German wine sections of your off-licence or supermarket.

Here's a run-down of some of the best easy-drinking bargains and what foods, if any, you should match them with:

Kendermanns, Dry Riesling
A refreshing, dry white wine in the New World style. It's crisp and light with unusual pear, melon and citrus flavours. Would be an easy party pleaser as it's great to drink on its own. The dryness would also help pique people's appetite if you served a couple of glasses before dinner.

Cost: £3.99 - £4.99
Where to find it: Most supermarkets and off-licences

JJ McWilliam Shiraz Cabernet
The Australian wine-making McWilliam family calls this spicy red its "barbie wine" - perfect for pairing with Italian food, red meat and food just off the grill. Its fruity, raspberry aroma and smooth feel make it nice for drinking with light nibbles as well.

Cost: £4.99
Where to buy it: Sainsbury and Asda

Blue Nun Riesling 2002 Qualitatswein Pfalz
This is not the same as the infamous Blue Nun. It's made from the higher quality Riesling grape, whereas ordinary Blue Nun was a blend of Sylvaner and Muller-Thurgau. It's good value and tastes of tropical fruits. Fine to drink on its own or to complement salty snacks. Well worth a try - you'll be impressed and surprised.

Cost: £4.49
Where to find it: Most supermarkets and off-licences

Ernest & Julio Gallo, Sierra Valley White Zinfandel
This light - to medium-bodied wine has a fragrant, floral aroma reminiscent of orange blossoms and fresh nectarines. We recommend enjoying this with a variety of light foods such as mild cheeses, party nibbles and fruit salads. It's a good bet for lazy summer afternoons - we spent one afternoon sipping delightful spritzers.

Cost: £4.46 - £4.99
Where to find it: Most supermarkets and off-licences

Rivercrest White Zinfandel
This California rose is a smooth, flavourful and extremely versatile wine. It's ideal to drink on its own, as an aperitif, or as an accompaniment to seafood, chicken and pasta served with creamy sauces.

Cost: £3.79
Where to find it: Most supermarkets and off-licences
