Does organic wine free you from hangovers?
Is it true organic wine doesnt give you a hangover?
However, organic wine, drunk in moderation, is less likely to give you a hangover than standard wine. All wines are treated with sulphur dioxide to help prevent deterioration in taste, but most organic winemakers tend to add far less than is routine practice. Many people react badly to sulphur and get headaches, so it is fair to say that organic wine is less likely than normal wine to give you a hangover.
A few years ago there was a very poor selection of organic wines on the market. Happily, that is not the case today. I can recommend one brilliant organic company called Vintage Roots (Farley Farms, Bridge Farm, Reading Road, Arborfield, Berkshire RG2 9HT. Tel: 0118 976 1999; email: info@vintageroots.co.uk). All of their wines are organic, and those that I tasted were seriously delicious.
Tescos organic wines are also worth a try. Among the whites, try a bottle of Les Etoiles Organic Chardonnay/Chenin (£3.99). Easy-drinking, light and slightly flowery, this is a great apéritif and, served half-and-half with sparkling water, it makes the perfect spritzer. It tastes good with all sorts of light dishes, such as salads, sandwiches, etc.
If you prefer red, try a bottle of the Domaine de la Grand Bellane Valréas Côtes du Rhone Villages 1998 (£5.99). This is the perfect foil for barbecued dishes and can be served chilled. For that special dinner party, push the boat out and treat yourself to a bottle of Domaine Richeaume Syrah 1996 (£14.99). This wine complements fully flavoured dishes, especially game, duck, peppered steak, beef in red wine or coq au vin. This wine has attitude and is full-bodied with masses of upfront spicy fruit and gamey overtones. While expensive, its worth every penny. Happy drinking.
