Red wine A to E

by Alice King

question
I know white wine is listed by number according to its dryness, but how is red wine listed in the UK? I'm from Canada where white as well as red are listed by numbers, with 0 being the driest. I can't seem to find any numbers for red wine in the UK.

Right now, I'm buying types of red wine that I know are dry (e.g., Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc), but I'd like to try some new wines. Please help! Thanks.

answer

In the UK, red wines are classified from A to E depending on the fullness of the wine, rather than the sweetness or dryness factor. So, for instance, a light red such as Beaujolais would rate as A whereas a big, rich Cabernet Sauvignon would command an E.

By using this system you can experiment with all kinds of new red wines, safe in the knowledge that the style is to your liking. You'll find these on the back labels of wines in supermarkets and off-licences.
