Wines for asthma and allergy sufferers

by Alice King

question
Being asthmatic and allergic to some additives in wine, I'd like to know what white wines are totally organic and safe for me to drink.

answer
Organic wines certainly use no chemicals in the production of grapes and contain far less sulphur dioxide than 'ordinary' wines. But I'm not a scientist, so I couldn't lay claim, 100%, to organic wines being totally 'safe' for you to drink.

It's likely, however – and I've talked to many asthma suffers – that the effects will be much reduced if you stick to organic wines. In addition to this, I find many allergy sufferers are far less likely to react to white wines than reds, owing to different elements within the grapes' skins.

The best and most knowledgeable company in the UK who have an entire list of organic wines from around the word (and deliver mail order), are Vintage Roots, Farley Farm, Reading Road, Arbolfield, Berkshire RG2 9HT, tel. 0118 976 1999

Safeway was one of the pioneers of organic wines. Their Sancerre 2000, at about £8, is stylish with gooseberry overtones; for special occasions try their Domaine Bottled Sancerre, Les Bonnes Bouches 2000, Domaine Henri Bourgeois at around £9 – it's dry with creamy, complex fruit.

If you want to try a red, my advice is to try a light-bodied one such as their 1999 Chinon, £5.99, from the Loire, which has tangy, refreshing red berry flavours.

From Tesco try the light and zippy Les Etoiles Organic Chardonnay/Chenin, around £4.00.

Hope this helps
