Can I freeze bananas?

by Terry Farris

question
Is it possible – and safe – to freeze bananas to use as baby food? If so, should I freeze them whole, and what's the best way to serve them?

answer
Yes, you can quite happily freeze bananas for baby food. First, you should mash or puree ripe bananas with a little lemon juice or perhaps orange juice (which would probably be better for babies). The juice will help prevent it from turning brown, which bananas inevitably do when they come into contact with air. It's unsightly, but does no harm.

Freeze in small containers and defrost completely. You could mix it with other fruits as well, such as strawberries, pears or anything that will easily mash. Add as much juice as needed for the desired consistency.

Good luck,

Terry
