Taste Test: Green & Black's Organic Ice Cream
Almost everyone we know who has tasted Green & Black's organic chocolate has become an instant devotee of its dense flavours and the 'good for you' organic ingredients. We expected the company's ice cream to be as irresistible as the chocolate bars. But, after years of being fans of Ben & Jerry's, we were wondering how Green & Black's stacked up. So we decided to perform an iVillage taste test on the company's three new flavours - Chocolate Mint, Chocolate Orange and Vanilla Caramel Nut as well as the old favourite Chocolate. Here's what our panel of judges found:
Chocolate Mint
Our tasters loved how this ice cream's full chocolate flavour is just kissed with mint, instead of the full-on minty freshness you find in other versions. 'Nice and chocolatey and very rich,' was the consensus. The only criticism: 'Would be nice with actual chocolate chunks'
iVillage verdict: A mint ice cream for chocoholics
Chocolate Orange (pictured above)
Whether you enjoy this flavour depends on how much you like chocolate and orange in combination. Some of our tasters found it not very orangey, others found it too much so. It also seemed the least likely of the bunch to be downed in one sitting. Said one taster, 'It's almost too rich.' On the plus side, 'It doesn't taste artificial like some other brands,' another said.
iVillage verdict: Rich and probably only for serious fans of the orange-chocolate combination
Vanilla Caramel Nut
This ice cream got marks for its creaminess, something the company says it achieves by whipping less air into the product. It also divided tasters on the nut issue: Two enthused about them, saying 'a nice crunch in every bite!' and 'lovely nutty bits'. Two others thought it was 'too nutty.' Either way, the vanilla ice aspect was a hit, with the caramel ribbon livening up the mix. One taster declared it so intricate that 'it takes half an hour to eat one spoonful.'
iVillage verdict: Smooth and crunchy at the same time, and good for vanilla fans
Chocolate
The dark, rich tub of regular chocolate consistently drew accolades from our panel, even winning over the one certified non-chocoholic. 'I'm not usually a big fan - it's normally too sickly - but this is gorgeous.' The flavour struck one as having the perfect balance between bitter and sweet, and the richness meant just a few bites satisfied most tasters' sweet tooth. One taster, however, foresaw a classic problem with this flavour: 'Probably the greatest threat to skinny thighs since pavlova!'
iVillage verdict: A classic that is as good or better than fancier flavours
