Anthony Worrall Thompson makes a right dog's dinner

by Peggy Nuttall

Anthony Worrall ThompsonAsk Anthony Worrall Thompson any question and he'll inevitably end up talking about kids, pets and family life. It's a far cry from the commitment-shy notorious womaniser he once was, but just goes to show that people really do change. With his focus increasingly shifting towards healthy eating and nutrition, we catch up with him as he launches his latest unusual venture: pet food

I hear you're creating recipes for dogs?

Anthony Worrall Thompson: Yep, it's for Comic Relief's Andrex Puppy Charity Lunch. I'm doing a doggy lunch for people and their pets, who will be sitting beside their owners at the table.

And what will be on the menu?

Anthony Worrall Thompson: Lamb stew with carrots and rice for the dogs, and for humans I'm doing a roast pumpkin soup with parsley puree followed by organic chicken wrapped in Parma ham. There'll be vegetable Wellington for the vegetarians.

I used to find the smell of cat food quite appealing, do you think pet-human food swapping is the next big thing?

Anthony Worrall Thompson: I hope not.

What about dog restaurants?

Anthony Worrall Thompson: I've never had one, and certainly never been to one. I think that's going over the top. We all love our animals, but pet restaurants, pampered poodles, that's pushing it. They're like fashion accessories.

What else do you have lined up this year?

Anthony Worrall Thompson: Lots of telly and a few books, including one on diets for diabetes sufferers. Diabetes is a huge problem in this country with around two million sufferers and probably another million who don't know they've got it; a lot of that is down to obesity. I was diagnosed with a pre-diabetic state that made me panic a bit, so I had to be careful. The whole problem with dieting is that it's boring. So all the books I've brought out I've tried to make appealing to everyone. I'm also opening another grill restaurant, possibly in Windsor, and possibly vegetarian. It's a wildly untapped market.
