Television personality and Celebrity Masterchef Liz McClarnon dishes up a weekly serving of foodie trivia including personal culinary experiences and fantastic recipes to try at home
Going Japanese in the north of England
Liverpool, Glasgow and Manchester have been privy for the last 7 years or so to a teppanyaki restaurant called Sapporo… Offering the usual comedy chef routine as he prepares your food in a similar way to the world famous Benihanna…. Yet this place has a twist, i can say honestly that the food is better at Sapporo than at Benihanna.
I thought that possibly people could grow tired of the chefs flicking eggs into their chef hats and having their eyebrows singed as all the lights go down for the teppanyaki table bonfire but no, not yet they haven't.
But the great thing for me is that i enjoy the food so much that i can sit in peace in the bar area and enjoy the truly tasty food they offer… Shall we get down to business….
Number one favourite on my Sapporo list is the Beef Sukiyaki…
A sweet clear soup filled to the brim with rare beef, mushrooms, veg, glass noodles and more it is truly, truly DIVINE! (and no i am not exaggerating, it is beautiful!) It's the hot sweet soup that catches you first then you may opt for a slice of the juicy meat and within twenty minutes, you're full of happiness. (sorry food does get me like that!) But it's that nice, satisfied full, not the "let me unbutton my jeans and don't talk to me for half an hour" full.
I honestly crave this dish all the time!
Mum likes to go for the seafood sukiyaki, the same idea but obviously full of prawns, salmon and other 'Vie de la mer'
The younger McClarnon went for The Sumo Special ...16 oz Ribeye, largely diced and served with garlic fried rice, some stir fried vegetables, potatoes and a selection of sauces o the side….yep it's a lot!
At Sapporo the meat used is of a very high standard and cooked to perfection (which if you read this blog often, you'll know is a big thing with me)
When i'm there i also dabble in a little tempura…king prawns, mushrooms, and veg all fried in a light Japanese sauce…delicious…
A quick mention also to the cocktails….ever had a Mojito made with sake…. do it! They serve them here and they're so tasty…just a quick warning… don't have too many because you won't be able to see your main….;)
I urge you to try A Sapporo near you, you will not be disappointed …great food with a bit of light entertainment thrown in for good measure…
