Hair trends: spring/summer
Want to look as good as the A-list? We tracked down the top hair stylists in biz to get the lowdown on how to achieve this season's soft chignons, sassy top-knots and messy textured waves
Hollywood Waves
Theatrical hair is a really big trend this season and voluminous, flowing locks are the epitome of sophisticated glamour. This style requires waves to be smooth and dressed, as seen recently on Philip Lim's catwalk at New York Fashion Week. Wellaflex Silvikrin Style Director, Zoe Irwin, explains how to create the look:
'Give waves movement and bounce by spraying Wellaflex Heat Creations Blow Dry Spray (£2.79 for 150ml) onto damp hair to protect against heat and hold the style. Blow dry the hair using a large, round bristle brush, pointing the nozzle downwards to boost shine.
'When completely dry, take sections of the hair and tong, slide hair off the tongs in a loop and then pin close to the head. Once cooled, remove the pins and shake the hair out.
'Finish by spraying Wellaflex Silvikrin Heat Creations Hairspray (£2.79 for 250ml) to hold the style.'

Textured messy updo
SJP's contemporary twist on traditional glamour encapsulates this season's messy yet glam trend. And the good news is that it's a style that's easy to achieve at home. Leo Bancroft, Southern Hairdresser of the Year explains how:
'Begin by blasting dry your hair to create some volume. Loosely pull back the hair with your fingers to create the textured messy feel, then secure at the base of the crown with a band.
'Wrap the hair around the band and secure with some grips which will give you a three dimensional effect. If you feel you need more height or detail in this style, build the front area into a quiff to give the style a modern twist. Again, pull the quiff into shape using your fingers to give texture for a soft and alluring shape.'

Modern pouf
This laid back take on the Bridget Bardot look is perfect for long summer evenings. The messyness makes it somehow elegant and casual at the same time. Odile Gilbert at Aveda explains how to get the look:
'Tease hair with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray (£15.50) and place a hairdresser's sponge on the crown of the head. Twist the sides of hair over the sponge from left to right, then pull the top section of hair over before securing with hair pins.
'Bring a piece of hair in front across the face and pin it in place, finishing with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.'

The top knot
Always an A-list favourite, the top knot is this season's striking up-do and has been spotted all over catwalks and the red carpet as seen here on Nicole Richie at this year's Oscar ceremony. Shockwaves Style Director, Michael Douglas, explains how to create it:
'Apply Shockwaves Shine & Body Mousse (£2.99 for 200ml) to damp hair before blow drying to ensure hair is soft with lots of movement. Once dry, apply Shockwaves Shine & Anti Frizz Serum (£2.99 for 75ml) and comb hands through top and sides to gives hair gorgeous shine and a smooth, flawless finish.
'Scrape hair into a high ponytail and secure tightly from the nape of the neck with a band. The key to this look is to backcomb sections of the ponytail to create height.
'Wrap hair around ponytail, then secure with pins. Leave some strands of hair hanging loose for a sassy look.'

Modern Chignon
This beautifully intricate, yet soft style, as seen at Fendi, is true Hollywood glamour. Akin Konizi, 2009 HJ's British Hairdresser of the Year 09 and HOB Salons' International Creative Director, explains how to do it right:
'Begin by applying High Hair Leave It Long (£9.69) and blow drying the hair smooth. Place in a low-side parting and gather all the hair into a low slung ponytail at the opposite side of your head to your parting and secure behind the ear.
'With the excess hair, twist the ponytail and begin to wrap around the base of the ponytail, continuing to twist as you go. This will give a knotted effect as the hair begins to coil on itself.
'Secure in place by using kirby grips through the ends and into the knot. With the sweeping fringe created from the low-side parting, smooth this through with a Denman brush and guide behind the ear to give a polished, smooth finish.
'Finish by spritzing SP Ultimation (£12.29) for delicate hold.'

Long and slick
If there was an award for best hair at this year's Oscar ceremony, Sandra Bullock would have picked that up too. Her healthy, vibrant and shiny locks were dazzling and it's the simplicity of her slick and shiny long do that really made it work. Anya Dellicompagni, Director of Hairdressing at Francesco Group and Scissors for Wella Professionals explains how to create the look at home:
'Firstly, place the hair in a side parting and apply Wella Professionals Crystal Styler (£8.69 for 200ml) to damp hair before blow drying.
'Blow dry the hair smooth and spritz over with Wella Professionals Flat Iron Spray (£10.29 for 200ml) then straighten hair with flat irons.
'To create the curl effect, tong large sections of the end of the hair and brush through.
'Create a shiny, sleek look by applying a few drops of Wella Professionals Pure Glamour (£11.79 for 75ml) serum through the hair then tuck behind the ear.
'Finish by misting all over with SP Ultimation Hairspray (£12.29 for 300ml).'

Side swept waves
Side swept waves, as seen recently on actress Mila Kunis, radiate glamour, soften the face and make a delightfully fresh look for Spring. Sebastian Professional Global Creative Design Team Member, Shay Dempsey, tells all on how to achieve this show-stopping style:
'Part the hair and apply Sebastian Professional Whipped Creme (£17.25) to the hair before blow drying to add body and bounce and to help define the curls. Once dry, section the hair and tong but twisting and wrapping the hair in an upwards motion.
'Once all of the hair has been curled, tease locks with your fingers to loosen the curls.
'Sweep hair to one side and tie with a band into a loose ponytail making sure the hair at the crown and at the opposite side of the ponytail isn't too tight so that it maintains that essential height and volume.
'Twist the loose hair around the ponytail creating loops of waves, securing in place with pins. Once all of the hair is in place, gently pull out strands of hair for a soft sassy look.
'Finally, hold the style in place by misting Sebastian Professional Zero Gravity (£14.10) all over the style.'

Voluminous waves
Cameron Diaz's super chic style is a perfect example of how to wear waves this Spring. The simple soft curls ooze sexiness and sophistication and the good news is that with the right tools and products, it's a synch to recreate. Wellaflex Silvikrin Style Director, Zoe Irwin, explains how:
'Give waves an injection of movement and bounce by spraying Wellaflex Heat Creations Blow Dry Spray (£2.79 for 150ml) onto damp hair to protect against heat.
'Blow dry the hair using a large, round bristle brush, pointing the nozzle downwards to boost shine. When completely dry, take sections of the hair and tong, slide hair off the tongs in a loop and then pin close to the head.

The side-parted updo
We all love an updo that requires minimum effort to achieve. Sebastian Professional Global Creative Design Team Member, Shay Dempsey, tells us how to recreate Demi Moore's ultra-chic, asymetric hair style.
'Create a side parting and apply Sebastian Professional Whipped Creme (£17.25) to the hair before blow drying to add body and bounce and to help define the curls. Once dry, section the hair and tong, twisting and wrapping the hair in an upwards motion.
'Once all of the hair has been curled, tease locks with your fingers to loosen the curls.
'Sweep hair to one side and tie with a band into a loose ponytail making sure the hair at the crown and at the opposite side of the ponytail isn't too tight so that it maintains that essential height and volume.

'Finally, hold the style in place by misting Sebastian Professional Zero Gravity (£14.10) all over the style.'

60's Parisian updo
This complicated but ultra chic do was talk of the town at Christian Siriano's Fall/Winter 2010 Show during New York Fashion week. Aveda lead stylist Antoinette Beenders explains how the look can be adapted and achieved at home.
'Prep hair by blow drying smooth and curling hair in one-inch pieces. Brush curls through, spraying with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray (£15.50) for light, workable hold.
'Pull hair back tightly and wind it into a twist, pinning it against the head with bobby pins. Finish the look by backcombing the front section of hair, brushing it through and twisting it back. Pin in place to create ultra-volume and a glamorous, retro effect.'

Gorgeously gamine
Proving that short hair can be glamorous too, Alice in Wonderland star Mia Wasikowska really rocks this textured gamine look.
Keep this style under control with Trevor Sorbie's Beautifully Moisturised Goop (£4.99) - to add texture and shine. Use a tail comb to add definition and style. Simple!

Prince Charming
We wouldn't recommend imitating the make-up but bobbed hair with a waffle texture as seen on the catwalk at Vivienne Westwood is a hairstyle for the seriously fashion forward this summer. Pantene Pro-V Global Ambassador, Sam McKnight who created the look explains how turn this glam catwalk style into a wearable look at home:
'Comb Pantene Pro-V Volume & Body Mousse (£3.27) through the hair to add texture then blow dry. Part hair in the centre and roughly divide into five sections, taking hair from the upper layer only, about 2 inches above the ear. Braid each of the five sections tightly, starting a couple of inches from the roots.
'Once braided, mist each section with a protective layer of Pantene Pro-Volume and Body Hairspray (£3.27). Using straightening irons, work along the braid, from roots to ends, pressing the braid between the plates of the iron to dry.
'Undo the braids and brush through, then gather hair into a loose ponytail, low on the neck.
'Fold the ends on the ponytail under and tuck under the hair at the nape, pinning with grips to secure strongly. Finish the look by smoothing over with Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Moisture Balance leave in Conditioner (£3.99) on hair from the parting, to flatten the hair on the top of the head. Allow loose tendrils to escape giving the appearance of beautiful imperfection.'
