Happy musical Mondays
Today is a day of musical reunions. The Happy Mondays, icons of the late 80s, early 90s MaDchester era, have announced that they will be reforming with the original line-up for a May tour.
I kind of liked them when I was younger. I had a mild crush on Shaun Ryder, but I thought that Bez was a bit scary (I was only 12 when they peaked, so to speak). Kinky Afro is still one my all time favourite songs – it makes people swagger when they walk.
But would I pay to see them now? No, I don’t think I would. I saw them a few years back at a summer festival, and it was painful watching Shaun Ryder dad dancing.
The Happy Mondays are old. It would be like an awkward family do, where you see distant relatives for the first time – they look similar but there is nothing really to talk about beyond the marriage/kids/career interrogations. Plus I was never a hardcore fan. Stop twisting their melons, man, and move on.
Another big Manchester band doing the re-rounds is The Stone Roses. Again, I loved these when I was a nipper, but then their second album Second Coming – no irony, just pure arrogance – was nowhere near as good as their seminal self-titled first album and they lost their magic. I can always revisit their earlier stuff though.
And I guess that’s my point. Call me cynical but these nostalgia tours smack of profiteering. Well, of course they do, they have to charge money for the performances! But revisiting old versions of youthful bands is depressing. I’d rather get the old albums out, crack open a bottle of wine and reminisce about the good old times.
I’m clearly in the minority though – sales for The Stone Roses reunion tour have gone through the roof. Mani, the bassist went shopping and found £2million in his bank account. It was the advance from tour sales. Better than finding a tenner in your jeans I guess. Actually, if you’re a Stone Roses fan you can look forward to a brand spanking new album later this year.
One reunion that may not be happening in the near future, however, is Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell Never one for being direct – Cheryl generally prefers to communicate via the medium of cryptic T-shirts – the nation’s darling has sparked controversy by performing her new single on BBC’s The Voice, despite Cowell wanting her to return to the X-Factor. The Voice is being pitched as X-Factor’s main rival. Ouch.
This is a far cry from Cowell’s assertions that Cheryl ‘misses him’ and would probably crawl back to X-Factor with her glittery begging bowl. Not so, Simon… Not so.
