Haunted PlacesGhosts don't only come out at Halloween. Find out where to find them as we celebrate the launch of The Most Amazing Haunted & Mysterious Places in Britain, published by Reader's Digest

Blickling Hall, Norfolk
This handsome Norfolk mansion appears on the Top 10 Most Haunted list of the National Trust. Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII, and her father Thomas are said to return to Hall, the Boleyn family home, on the anniversary of her execution on May 19th. Anne arrives by coach, her severed head in her lap, while Sir Thomas rides in a carriage around the countryside pursued by shrieking demons as penance for not saving his daughter from her fate.

Chester, Cheshire
Chester is one of the most haunted cities in Britain; over 80 instances of ghostly activity have been recorded there in recent years. Look out for the chocolate shop in Eastgate Street, where the spirit of a lovelorn girl regularly scatters the chocolates from the window displays. Around the town, it's a veritable historical pagent, with Roman Legionaries at the George and Dragon Hotel, a Saxon monk at St John's church, Roundheads at Brown Heath Crossroads and Cavalier soldiers on the city walls at Morgan's Mount.

Ancient Ram Inn, Gloucestershire
Even hardened sceptics are forced to agree that there is a chilling, oppressive - even evil - atmosphere about this 12th century house at Wotton-Under-Edge, that today plays host to many supernatural evenings and investigative events. Spirits include a priest/monk, a cavalier, a witch, a highwayman and two phantom cats.

Tamworth Castle, Staffordshire
Staff at Tamworth Castle have experienced all manner of bizarre happenings in recent years, from hearing footsteps and furniture being dragged around to feeling strange presences. A nun, known as the Black Lady, and a maiden lamenting her murdered lover, known as the White Lady, are resident ghosts of long standing, but exactly who - or what - is scaring the staff remains a mystery.

Glamis Castle, Angus
If the legends about Glamis Castle are anywhere near the truth, the ancestral home of the late Queen Mother is home to a terrifying medley of ghosts. From outside there are said to be more windows than can be found inside, and rumours of a hideously deformed family member imprisoned for life were never fully quashed. Incumbents include a young servant, a spirit wrapped in flames, a woman without a tongue and a gibbering madman on the roof.
