Preventing dry hair
A: Reducing your hair's exposure to heat and natural elements is the first step towards prevention. Try to avoid using blow-dryers and heat-styling implements frequently, and when you do, keep them on the lowest heat setting possible. You can also wear a hat or scarf if you're going to be out in the sun or in windy weather for an extended time (while you're at the beach or skiing, for example). And don't wash your hair every day. Unless you have an oily scalp, only shampoo it about two or three times a week or often enough to remove dirt and build-up.
If you're like many women with fine, dry hair, you probably overcondition and end up with your hair plastered flat against your head. The trick is to find products with enough conditioners to seal in moisture, but not so much that they weigh down your hair.
Try a few different shampoos and conditioners - especially those that contain humectants (check for these on the label). Once you find one with the right level of conditioning for your hair, stick to it. Avoid leave-in conditioners, and if your scalp is oily keep conditioners away from the roots. A small drop of silicone serum can help seal in moisture and add a bit of shine. Good luck.
