Caring for combination skin
How can I tell if I have combination skin and, if so, what kind of skin care routine should I be following?
If certain areas of your face are dry and other parts oily, then you have combination skin. On most days, your skin will probably feel normal or dry on most of your face and the oily part will be concentrated in the T-zone, the area across your forehead and down your nose and chin.
You'll know you have combination skin if:
- Some areas of your face feel 'tight' after washing. These same areas may also look flaky and dull or feel rough.
- In other areas, typically the T-zone, your skin looks shiny, feels greasy and is prone to pimples and blackheads.
Cleanse: use a mild cleanser on your entire face up to twice a day.
Moisturise: use a good moisturiser on the dry areas only.
Balance: look for products that normalise your skin, such as those that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs or fruit acids) or retinols, a vitamin A derivative.
Control: use oil-absorbing make-up on the oily areas of your face to help control shine.
