Red eyes and diet - what's the link?

by The Diet Doctors

question

The whites of my eyes are often red. Could I change my diet to make them a little brighter?

I drink plenty of water and only have a couple of alcoholic drinks a week. I try to eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and veg, but often snack on high-carb, high-fat foods like crisps and biscuits.

I have had bad gastritis for several years and am on a very high dose of proton pump inhibitors to control it.

answer

Red eyes can be an indicator of sluggish liver. In many people this will be related to a high alcohol consumption but in your case we suspect that it is related to your high-fat snacks and possibly the use of the proton pump inhibitor.

The problem with any drug that lowers your stomach acid long-term is that it stops you digesting your food properly and this can lead to food intolerances which can then put a strain on your liver and your digestive system.

What we would suggest is that you cut out all fatty snacks, citrus fruits, alcohol, coffee, smoking, chocolate, spicy foods and nuts - not to mention reducing your stress in your life to tackle the gastritis so that you can come off the medication.

What you could use for the gastritis in the interim is Mastic Gum, 1 gram at night for up to a month available at the Nutri Centre.

PS - One final word - chew your food well!
