Women's health chat with Dr Sarah Brewer

continued from page 7
When will my period return after breast-feeding?
Q
: I had a baby 15 weeks ago and breast-fed for the first three weeks. I've still not had a period and was wondering if this was normal, and how long you think I should wait before seeing my GP.

A: It can take a while for periods to return after you've had a baby. If you are not breast-feeding exclusively, it is important to ensure you are using a reliable method of contraception as some women ovulate within 21 days of giving birth. If there is no risk of pregnancy, then there is no reason to be concerned - many women do not see a period for 4 months after stopping breastfeeding. If you have been having unprotected sex, then it's important to have a pregnancy test.
