Fish oils help arthritis

by Alyson Greenhalgh and Dr. Sara Kirk

question
Do fish oils really help arthritis?

answer
Fish oils such as cod and halibut liver oils have long been associated with easing arthritis pain and are often lauded for 'oiling the joints.' Now research by scientists at Cardiff University has revealed that the Omega-3 fatty acids in cod liver oil do in fact stop or reverse the effects of enzymes that damage the cartilage in osteoarthritic joints. Says Fergus Logan, chief executive of the Arthritis Research Campaign,"we're deighted that something as simple and non-controversial as cod liver oil has the potential to bring relief to so many people who suffer from osteoarthritis".
