Can echinacea prevent colds and flu?

by Alyson Greenhalgh and Dr. Sara Kirk

question
I have heard that echinacea can boost the immune system. Is this true?

answer
There is no evidence that echinacea can prevent the onset of respiratory tract infections, colds or the flu. However, clinical studies have shown that if echinacea is taken at the first signs of these ailments it can lessen cold and flu symptoms. Due to the range of echinacea products, it is difficult to recommend specific brands or doses. Some doctors advise taking echinacea if you begin to feel under the weather but not on a continual basis.
