Osteopathy

continued from page 2
What to watch out for
If you have osteoporosis or inflammation, infections, tumours, circulatory problems or a recent fracture, an osteopath may decide not to use manipulation. Avoid vigorous manipulation if you have badly prolapsed (slipped) discs.

How much does it cost?
The first consultation usually lasts 30-60 minutes; subsequent sessions may be 20-30 minutes. Fees vary according to location, but expect to pay £20-£40 plus for the initial consultation.

How can I find it?
General Osteopathic Council and Osteopathic Information Service
(osteopaths must pass a professional assessment to qualify for the state register)
Osteopathy House, 176 Tower Bridge Road, London SE1 3LU

Osteopathy and chiropractic are often confused because both treatments involve manipulation of the body. Chiropractic was developed by an osteopath, Daniel D Palmer, and tends to be more mechanistic in its approach, with emphasis on the spine as the major support structure. Any misalignments in the spine can affect the whole body.

What's the difference between osteopathy and chiropractic?
Osteopaths take a more holistic approach and will explore a patient's lifestyle, habits, mental and emotional health to find reasons for musculo-skeletal problems. Poor posture in childhood, for example, could lead to later back problems.

While chiropractors tend to make more use of X-rays, osteopaths traditionally use more soft tissue manipulation and less high velocity thrusts, but in actual practice the distinction is becoming blurred. Some chiropractors work more like osteopaths, and some osteopaths more like chiropractors.
