Stress incontinence during sex

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I'm 22 and have started a new relationship. Recently I experienced what I believe to be stress incontinence during intercourse. I found this very worrying and embarrassing although my partner was very supportive. This happened recently and I have not had sex since. It has never happened before, but I am worried it will happen again.

answer
Some women do leak fluid during orgasm - some researchers believe this is urine, while others think it is a form of female ejaculation from our equivalent of the prostate gland. If there is any possibility that it was stress incontinence, the easiest remedy is to ensure your bladder is empty before making love - a brief visit to the bathroom (perhaps applying a little lubricating gel at the same time) should solve the problem. If it continues, then it is possible that you are ejaculating and I am not aware of any obvious remedy for this.
