Bleeding between periods

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I have not stopped bleeding since my last period, two months ago. I have about one day a week when the bleeding stops and it hurts when I have sex. I am 32 years old, and have 6 children. There is a strong history of cancer in my family - my sister had cervical cancer and my mother had breast cancer.

answer
Any unusual bleeding like this should always be reported to your doctor. Chances are that it is due to a hormone imbalance, but other causes such as infection (including chlamydia), an unrecognised miscarriage, a side effect of your method of contraception and fibroids need to be eliminated. Your doctor will want to examine you gently to see if the womb is enlarged, and will also want to check that your smear is up to date.

Don't put off seeking help any longer - two months is a long time to be bleeding, and you may even have developed anaemia as a result.
