Colposcopy exam shows cells

I recently had a colposcopy exam, during which they took away some abnormal cells for examination from my cervix. They have written to me telling me I have CIN 3. Can you explain a bit about what this means or refer me to a website. I am only 24 years old and very worried.

This takes you to a site that explains all about cervical screening, the results and treatments. It explains that CIN is divided into grades, and that CIN is diagnosed when the full thickness of the surface layer of the cervix is affected. It also reassures you that, although CIN 3 is also known as carcinoma-in-situ, this does NOT mean that you have cancer of the cervix.

It is, however, important that you are treated as soon as possible. It is excellent news that you have had a smear, and that diagnosis and treatment are in hand. I know it is all very worrying, but try to remain positive if you can.
