Two-week long period

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I have been having a period for two weeks now. I have been experiencing some cramps and clotting. Is there anything to worry about?

answer
You don't say how old you are, but painful heavy periods tend to be more common in the first few years after periods first start, and sometimes again in the last few years before the menopause. This is because you don't always release an egg during some cycles. As a result, hormone imbalances occur that cause the womb lining to plump up, and bleeding can be heavy and painful.

If bleeding has been going on for two weeks or more, it is important to see your doctor for a check up. It is also important to rule out a possible miscarriage with retained tissues, and to ensure that you do not become anaemic.
