Penetration is painful

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
For the last two years I have experienced pain during deep penetration when having sex. My doctor said that it could be chlamydia but I have just had tests done and these have ruled out all sexually transmitted diseases. After intercourse, my stomach feels bloated and hurts like period pain and this can last for 15 minutes. When I had the tests done, my cervix was inflamed.

answer
Pain during intercourse can be due to your ovaries being in the line of fire (they are just as sensitive to being hit as male testicles) or to a gynaecological condition such as endometriosis. If discomfort continues, your GP should be willing to refer you to a gynaecologist to help find out the cause. Bloating of the stomach may be due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and this is another possible cause of abdominal symptoms, although this would tend to come on at other times rather than just after sex.

An inflamed cervix on its own with negative tests and a normal smear is not necessarily anything to worry about - it may just be a sign of pelvic congestion.
