Holiday vaccinations and pregnancy

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I want to start trying for a baby but am due to go to the Gambia on holiday and am worried about falling pregnant when taking malaria tablets and other necessary medication.

answer
When going for your pre-holiday inoculations, tell the GP or nurse that you want to start trying for a baby, as some of the travel vaccinations must not be given unless you are using effective contraception. Some malaria tablets can be used during pregnancy or pre-conceptual care period as the benefits are thought to outweigh the risks, and it is best to avoid others during the first three months of pregnancy where possible. If you can postpone trying for a baby until after your holiday that may be the best option, but ask your GP travel clinic for advice.
