Sterilisation and your weight

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I am thinking of sterilisation using keyhole surgery. Are there any weight limits?

answer
Sterilisation is easiest and safest to perform on women of a healthy weight. If you're very overweight, this will increase the chance of needing an open operation to perform the procedure (as opposed to keyhole surgery) and of complications relating to the general anaesthetic, as well as post-operative complications. Most surgeons have their own view on whether or not they will operate on someone who is overweight or obese, but this will also depend on your shape. If you are apple-shaped rather than pear-shaped this may make the procedure more difficult, for example. Be guided by your GP on whether or not sterilisation is the right option for you.
