Do I need to worry about wearing the right bra size?

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I have a painful, bruised feeling in my left breast which I only feel in certain positions and if I press my breast. I have worn the wrong size bra for three years, is this dangerous? Why is it so important to wear the correct size bra?

answer
I wouldn't say that wearing the wrong sized bra was dangerous, but it is not good for long-term breast health. Wearing a bra that is too tight can restrict blood flow (this can cause mastitis during lactation), while wearing one that is too big allows stretching of the 'cooper's ligaments' which support the breast, so that sagging occurs.

If you have an area of tenderness, it is important to get it checked by your GP.
