He can't ejaculate

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I'm having a relationship with an older man and he told me he has had a prostrate operation, which means that he can't ejaculate, but can still orgasm. He says he still gets the feelings, but nothing comes out. He says we don't need to use condoms as I can't catch anything or get pregnant by him because nothing ejaculates from his penis. Is he telling the truth?

answer
After a prostate operation, it is common for a man to ejaculate back into the bladder rather than out through the end of the penis. While, in general, this reduces the chance of pregnancy, it is still possible that some sperm may seep out.

It is also possible to catch a sexually transmissible infection, including warts, Herpes, Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV, from any genital-to-genital contact, even if there are no obvious signs of infection and no ejaculation of sperm. Don't take chances - do use a condom (as well as another method of contraception) to reduce the risk of infection and to guard against the small risk of pregnancy.
