Treatment for genital warts

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I think my boyfriend gave me genital warts. I've been having unprotected sex with him for about a week now and I recently found some strange lumps on my vulva - they're quite painful and it hurts when I move. I have booked an appointment with a clinic. If I do have genital warts, what sort of treatment would I be offered?

answer

Genital warts can take from several months to several years to appear after contact with the initial infections. It is also possible to pass on the virus without ever having symptoms yourself and if you have previously had them but been treated. It is therefore very difficult to say where you may have acquired them.

If the clinic confirms the diagnosis of genital warts, you will probably have them either frozen or painted with a substance that kills the wart virus. You can read more about genital warts here.
