Achy temples

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I have been getting sharp pains on the left side of my temple. The pain is very intense. This happens maybe three or four times in quick succession, then it disappears. I may have nothing for a couple of days then it comes back. I don't suffer from headaches or migraines. Do you have any suggestions?

answer
Any recurrent pain should be checked by your doctor, so do make an appointment to be seen. It is possible that you have an ear infection, but your doctor will also want to check your cranial nerve function and ensure that your temporal artery is not inflamed. He or she will probably check your blood pressure, too. Often pains like this remain unexplained, but you shouldn't ignore any symptoms that keep coming back or seem to be getting worse.
