Spotty scalp
I tend to get spots on my scalp underneath my hair and they've got really bad. I've tried so many shampoos - tea tree, lavender and mild conditioners, but they won't go away. Every time I think they've cleared up, I get another batch. They tend to be worse around the hairline and on the back of my head. I have blonde, fairly oily hair that I wash every other day. Have you got any tips or know a good shampoo? I have tried all the expensive designer ones and none work!
Recurrent spots imply you may have an infection of the hair follicles (folliculitis) or acne around the hairline, so it is worth asking your doctor for advice as you may need antibiotics (either as a lotion or by mouth).
It is also important to rule out head lice, which bite the scalp and can also cause spots. Natural remedies include rubbing the scalp before washing your hair with a solution of seven drops rosemary or tea tree essential oil, diluted with one tablespoon (15 ml) of carrier oil. Followed by the use of a tea tree shampoo, this has excellent antibacterial and antifungal actions.
Inflammation can be reduced by increasing intakes of essential fatty acids - eat more oily fish, nuts, seeds and take evening primrose, flaxseed or omega-3 fish oil supplements. Try boosting your immunity from inside too - take a probiotic supplement such as Multibionta, Actimel or ProViva juice (this is also important if you take antibiotics) and a remedy that helps to fight off infections such as echinacea and/or garlic extracts.
