Anorexic and concerned
I am anorexic and have been for around two years. I have been unwell recently due to functional dyspepsia. What can I do to get my digestive system working properly again?
Dyspepsia is a discomfort or burning felt centrally in the upper abdomen, usually due to excess production of stomach acids, which can reflux upwards into the oesophagus. It may help if you can eat little and often during the day, preferably fairly bland foods. Short-term symptoms of heartburn may be treated with antacids (containing calcium carbonate) available over the counter. More powerful drugs that temporarily switch off stomach acid production (for example, cimetidine, ranitidine and famotidine) are also available over the counter and from your doctor but should not be used long-term without seeking medical advice.
Liquorice (DGL form) is widely used to soothe indigestion. Other supplements that many people find helpful include a probiotic bacteria, like lactobacilli, aloe vera juice, colloidal silicol gel and vitamin B complex.
Further help is available from the Eating Disorders Association, tel: 01603 621414. Youth helpline: 01603 765050.
