Cravings during my period

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
At the beginning of February I joined a gym with a view to getting fit and toning up for the summer. So far I've been doing really well but I lapse when I get my period. I crave chocolate and I don't have the willpower not to eat it - despite the fact that I feel guilty afterwards. Then all my energy seems to disappear and I don't want to go to the gym, undoing all my good work. Is there anything I can do to stop this vicious circle?

answer
Cravings and lack of energy are usually linked with low blood glucose levels. Try to regulate your carbohydrate intake or follow a controlled carbohydrate diet. When craving chocolate, you may find it helpful to clean your teeth instead or, if you have to give in, to eat a low carbohydrate chocolate bar instead. Several brands have been launched recently and are available in pharmacies and health stores.
