PMS and alcohol
When I'm pre-menstrual and drink alcohol it seems to have an adverse effect on me. I can become aggressive, suffer memory loss, and do things totally out of character. Am I the only one - I try to avoid alcohol at this time, but due to an erratic cycle I sometimes get it wrong. I would appreciate any advice on this subject.
You are not alone - many women respond to alcohol differently at different times of their cycle. This is partly linked with changes in the level of retained fluid in the body (the portion in which alcohol becomes distributed). It is also linked with changing hormone levels, which affect the way the liver metabolises alcohol.
Taking the oral contraceptive pill also has an effect by interacting with an enzyme (aldehyde dehydrogenase) so that higher levels of the toxic acetaldehyde build up after drinking alcohol. You may find it helpful to take milk thistle or cynara artichoke extracts to help support the liver so it can break down alcohol more effectively.
For PMS symptoms, agnus castus and supplements supplying magnesium, zinc, calcium, vitamin D and vitamin B6 are helpful. Another interesting supplement for PMS contains plant pollen and pistil extracts (Femal), and has been shown to help reduce tension, irritability, bloatedness and weight gain. The pollen is treated to minimise risks of allergic reactions.
Keep an eye on your alcohol intake and keep it within the healthy limits.
