Can the Atkins diet cause the runs?

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
After being on the Atkins diet for two weeks I experienced bad diarrhoea. It has been constant now for three weeks. About 30 minutes after a meal I have to run to the bathroom. Should I give up the diet?

answer
Prolonged diarrhoea does not usually happen on a low carbohydrate diet. It is possible that you have food poisoning or another cause of loose bowels and it is important to see your doctor as any change in bowel habit needs to be investigated. You may find it helpful to take a probiotic supplement containing friendly digestive bacteria to help improve bowel function.
