Night eating

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I am suffering from 'night eating'. I wake up and eat throughout the night and punish myself the next day. I'm seeing an analytical therapist as I've had anorexia before. Are there any herbal medications or ideas you have to help with this? I even eat my flatmate's food.

answer
The best advice I can give is to contact the Eating Disorders Association. First Floor, Wensum House, 103 Prince of Wales Road, Norwich NR1 1DW. Their help line number is 0845 634 1414.

There is also Overeaters Anonymous at PO Box 19, Stretford, Manchester M32 9EB, 07000 784985 who have a 24-hour information line by answerphone. It may help to dial this number and listen to the message when you're alone at night. Try not to keep much food in the house, so that it's more difficult to eat at night. You may find it helpful to try a herbal preparation containing valerian, to help you keep calm and promote sleep (for example, Sedonium available from pharmacies) or one that makes you feel full and less likely to eat (like Zotrim).
