Is infertility hereditary?

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
Is infertility hereditary? My parents found it hard to conceive, and I worry I will also have problems. I have been off the pill for a year and still have had no luck.

answer
Difficulty conceiving is not usually due to an inherited problem, so try not to worry. Think positive - and remember that your generation has access to lots more drugs and treatments to help conception than there were available 20 years ago.

Your mum still managed to have you, so there is every chance that you will be able to conceive successfully. Have you tried using an ovulation predictor kit to show when you are ovulating? As you have been trying for a year, it's worth seeing your doctor so that simple tests such as a hormone check and a sperm count can be carried out in the first instance. Best of luck.
