Is it time to change my Pill?

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I've been taking the Microgynon 30 pill for ten years, but my period pains are getting worse and I've lost interest in sex. Is it time to change my pill to another one?

answer
The blend of hormones present in some contraceptive pills is known to cause low sex drive in some women. When this happens, it is usually necessary to change to a pill that is more oestrogen-dominant. If your family is complete, another option such as the Mirena intra-uterine system (a coil that releases a very low dose of progestogen hormone) may help to improve your period pain. Chat with your doctor about all the options available.
