Can the Pill make my breasts sore?

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I'm 19 years old and my breasts have become really sore. They're getting fuller and bigger, but I didn't know they grow after 16 or 17 years of age. It really hurts to lie on them and touch them - even washing - and they feel particularly sore around the nipples. I have been on the Pill (Dianette) for two years, could this be anything to do with the problem?

answer
Breasts continue to grow until the end of puberty, which can be age 18 or occasionally older. Certainly Dianette is not designed for long-term use, once the hair/spots it was prescribed for have resolved, do talk to your doctor about alternatives.

Do go back to see your doctor, as it sounds as if you need a check to help put your mind at rest, and to discuss moving to a different type of Pill or other form of contraception.
