No interest in sex

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I'm 24 years old and over the last few years my interest in sex has been waning. Now my sex drive has gone altogether. I also suffer from recurring thrush. Do you think it could be due to a lack of oestrogen?

answer
Low libido is common, and can have a number of causes. If sex drive has totally gone for more than three months, ask your doctor to measure your level of the hormone, prolactin.

Another cause of low libido can be the oral contraceptive pill, so if you are using a hormonal form of contraception, talk to your doctor about switching to another blend of hormones or another method.

For your recurrent thrush, visit a genito-urinary medicine clinic to have this properly diagnosed - often a bacterial imbalance known as bacterial vaginosis is to blame and needs a particular antibiotic treatment. Probiotic supplements will also help.

To help with your low sex drive, avoid excess stress, get plenty of sleep, take regular exercise to improve your level of fitness, and lose any excess weight. A multivitamin and mineral supplement, evening primrose oil and an adaptogen herb such as Siberian ginseng will help.
