Purple thread veins

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I have purple broken thread veins on my thighs. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?

answer
Thread veins are dilated capillaries in the skin. They can be related to a number of factors, including exposure to extreme hot or cold, liver problems and varicose veins - but often the cause remains unknown. It is a good idea to have a general check-up with your doctor to look for any obvious underlying causes.

Creams containing vitamin K may help to minimise thread veins. Laser therapy is also available privately to treat facial thread veins. Bilberry, red vine leaf and pycnogenol extracts are used to strengthen blood vessels and their supporting tissues, and are helpful in treating thread veins.

The most effective treatment seems to be laser therapy, however, which is available privately from some cosmetic surgery clinics.
