No feeling during sex

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
I had my first child six months ago and have been doing pelvic floor exercises every day, but I can't feel anything when having sex.

answer
Continue with the pelvic floor exercises, as these can take a while to bring about an improvement. It is important to ensure that the right pelvic floor muscles are being exercised.

Quality, rather than quantity is the key. It may help to insert one or two fingers into your vagina so you can practice squeezing these until you can recognise which muscles are involved.

Sometimes, weighted cones are advised to help boost the effects of pelvic floor exercises. These vary in weight from 5g to 60g and are worn internally for five to ten minutes a day to tighten and tone vaginal muscles - the muscles have to contract to hold the cone in place. The cones are available from some pharmacies. A progressive resistance vaginal trainer device (Pelvic Toner) is now also available. This is inserted into the vagina to give you something to squeeze against
