Vulva skin changes

by Dr Sarah Brewer

question
The skin on my vulva keeps on drying and flaking. I think that the skin there has also shrunk and sometimes I feel a burning sensation. What is it that I should do? I am too shy to go to the doctors.

answer
Depending on your age, several different vulval conditions can cause this. In someone who is menopausal, lack of oestrogen can cause tissues to shrink. Once diagnosed, this is easily treated by using a prescription-only oestrogen cream.

Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis can affect this area, while a number of other skin complaints can cause the skin to thin or change colour in this area. If you are too embarrassed to see your usual doctor, why not visit a genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic? You can see a doctor confidentially and your own GP will not be informed unless you want them to be. As a bonus, treatments from a GUM clinic are also free (no prescription charges). Details of the clinic can be obtained by phoning your local hospital.
