IBS attacks
I have suffered with IBS for years. Recently I suffered a particularly bad attack, which I passed quite a lot of heavily blood-stained mucus. The pain was worse than I have experienced before. I would like to hear what you think what I should do.
IBS does not cause heavily blood-stained mucus. This is more likely to be due to another problem such as an inflammatory bowel disease (for example, Crohn's or ulcerative colitis). Do go and see your GP as soon as possible as you need tests to examine your bowel fully to find out the underlying cause. Your GP should be willing to refer you to a gastroenterologist as soon as possible, as it sounds as if you need investigation and treatment. Although these kind of symptoms are worrying, it is important not to put off seeking help. Any unexplained pain or bleeding should always be reported to your doctor. Do let me know how you get on.
