Finding a local GP
I am a gypsy lady with no fixed address and recently I tried to register with a GP. I tried every surgery in the area that I am in at the moment, and beyond, but they all told me that, unless I had notes, I could not register. I have never been registered. I explained that I am a traveller, and I was still told that I am not allowed to register or see the GP - one surgery was even abusive to me. Please can you advise me on what I should do?
I'm sorry you've had difficulty registering with a GP. Everyone has a right to NHS medical treatment, whether it's as a temporary resident, or for emergency treatment and longer-term registration. Some GP surgeries may have closed their lists because they are full, but you can still be allocated to one of these surgeries if necessary. If someone was abusive, or you feel you have been given inaccurate information, you can make a complaint.
The NHS Direct telephone service can advise you and help you find a GP. Call them on 0845 4647. As well as listening to you and advising about symptoms or medical problems you may have, the NHS Direct staff can also provide information on local health services and surgeries. They can also advise you on how to make a complaint if you feel this is appropriate.
